Carpenter Ants:
A Carpenter ant’s food sources consist of honeydew from aphids, other insects and plant juices but once in your house, they will forage for mainly water and food scraps. The colony begins with one fertile female. Nests are then created in deteriorated wood which has been exposed to moisture. A colony does not produce young queens or males until it’s grown to the size of about 2,000 or more workers, which may take a colony anywhere between three to six years to reach this stage. Every year thereafter the colony will produce winged queens and males which venture off to start new colonies.
Where They Live:
Carpenter ants will primarily live inside rotting logs and stumps. However, they will make nests in places like the roof, windowsills and wood that is in contact with the soil. Generally, there will be one central nest and several satellite ones. Because they are one of the larger species of ant, they can travel long distances between nests and food sources.
Misconception:
One of the biggest misconceptions with Carpenter ants is that they eat wood. This is not true, instead they excavate the wood and pile it nearby, which is called frass. If you were to rummage through the frass you will find bug parts and other debris from the colony. Significant damage to a structure can come when an infestation goes untreated over a long period of time. Carpenter ant colonies can thrive for years at a time when untreated.
Carpenter Ant Treatment:
Carpenter ant colonies can be controlled with an exterior and interior treatment. All areas containing the frass inside the house will receive a treatment to kill the satellite colony. Treating the exterior helps prevent others from entering.
For long term control every other month or quarterly service is recommended.
Odorous House Ants:
These ants got their name from the “rotten coconut” smell that emits from their bodies when they are crushed. Odorous house ants are omnivorous, which means they feed upon other insects as well as grains. Their primary food is honeydew. Honeydew is produced by aphids and other sap-sucking insects.
Where They Live:
They nest in moist soil and forage along trails. When weather conditions change or honeydew production drops they will enter homes.
Misidentification:
The Odorous house ants swarm during the springtime, which means new queens and males take to the skies in search of starting new colonies. This is why they are often confused with swarming subterranean termites which will also swarm around the same time. The queens will generally be much larger than the male swarmers. Controlling crazy ants on your own is difficult as these insects are known to avoid many different kinds of ant baits. Typical ant control treatment options don’t work on crazy ants, so it is imperative to contact a pest control professional for control of a crazy ant infestation.
Pharoah Ants:
Pharaoh ants use a positive feedback system of foraging. Scouts ants will search for food. When one finds it, it will quickly return to the nest. This causes several ants to follow the successful scout’s trail back to the food source. Soon, a large group will be upon the food.

Elimination and control of Pharoah ants are difficult because multiple colonies can consolidate into smaller colonies during extermination programs only to repopulate later.
Pharaoh ants can feed on a wide variety of foods including grease, sugary foods, and dead insects. They can also gnaw holes in silk, rayon and rubber goods. Nests can be very small, making detection even more difficult. Nests are usually found in wall voids, under floors, or in various types of furniture. In homes, Pharoah ants are often found foraging in bathrooms or near food.
